PRODUCT REVIEW: “SO Delicious" Coconut Milk, Yogurt and Kefir

Are any of you out there “lactose intolerant?"  Or maybe you are staying away from regular milk because the doctor says is it is bad for your cholesterol? If so then I would love to introduce you to a product line that my family and I stumbled upon recently. The company is called Turtle Mountain and some of the products they produce are dairy free and soy free.

First up we tried their “So Delicious Coconut Milk Yogurt."   Yes, I said YOGURT.  As far as flavor goes it far surpasses any yogurt we ever tried. Flavors such as blueberry, raspberry, and strawberry/banana, all made with coconut cream with the added benefits of probiotics, which are contained in regular yogurt.  Once again this is good news for anyone who cannot have regular dairy or soy and have been missing healthy yogurt in their diet. My wife eats this stuff every day as she is allergic to both dairy and soy...she is clearly hooked.

Since we were so pleased with the yogurt, we visited their website to see what other products we could try.  We saw that they made Milk as well, but couldn't find it in any of our local health food stores.  After some begging and pleading at our local Wegmans they ordered it for us. Funny thing is they really didn’t seem too thrilled with this request, but low and behold once they got it in the store the product does not seem to stay on their shelves very long

Turtle Mountain's “SO Delicious Coconut Milk”... Here is the scoop on this product; it is Dairy (Lactose), Soy and Gluten Free. It won’t effect your cholesterol like regular milk can and it is loaded with vitamins as well as MCFA’s (Medium Chain Fatty Acids). MCFA’s are fatty chains that get burnt up as energy rather than being stored as body fat. If you haven’t heard, coconut has many other health benefits, one of which is it is high in lauric acid which is great in maintaining the body’s immune system.  We have chucked the Lactaid, Rice and regular milk we've been using up to this point and now use this product for everything as it is fantastic over cereal and even makes a great smoothie!  The milk comes in three flavors: original, unsweetened and vanilla.

This company has other great tasting products and the folks at Turtle Mountain were happy to send me some free coupons so I could sample some other treats and review them.  Next on the list...Kefir!

After finally tracking down this new product from Turtle,” So Delicious Coconut Milk Kefir", I was anxious to give it a try since I love Kefir. Kefir is a drinkable yogurt with active yeast and probiotics, combined with the nutritional benefits of coconut milk provide an excellent source of vitamins, minerals, and healthy bacteria.  Again, like the milk and the yogurt, this product is also gluten, soy and dairy free. If you never had Kefir before, I would describe the flavor as a very tangy yogurt. I am partial to the vanilla flavored one, but all were delicious. At one point I went on a smoothie binge and must have made three different smoothies in one night with this delicious drink.  For anyone who needs to remain gluten, lactose or soy free this is definitely something for you to try.  For anyone who just loves coconut and wants to break away from an old breakfast routine you can't go wrong with any of their products. This stuff is a MUST TRY…..I am seriously addicted.

Did You Know?: The water in coconuts is identical to blood plasma. This makes it easy to use for blood transfusions in case of an emergency. During WWII many wounded soldiers were saved in the Pacific because of emergency transfusion using coconut water as plasma.

  3. I would like to know if it would be possible to use it as a milk substitute in this particular recipe:

I also intended to use this recipe as the filling:

and was wondering if the liquid in it would be enough to not require a milk substitute.

  4. Anonymous,

So Del Coconut Milk would certainly work as a substitue in any recipe that calls for regular milk. I do it all the time!
HOWEVER: This cupcake recipe does call for 1/3 of heavy cream for the GRANACHE part. And while So Del does make creamers (like half and half) that can be used, heavy cream is called for here so I could not say if the results will be the same.

FILLING: Are you asking about the "coconut cream layer" in that recipe only? If so the So Del will work here. This recipe does call for half and half (not heavy cream), so you can run out and get the So Del Creamer for this part and all will work.

BTW; i see step 4 on the cupcake recipe says "milk/vanilla" yet I do not see vanilla in the ingredients list (guess the writer forgot to add this). Just make sure if a recipe calls for vanilla that you use the regular So Delicious Milk and not the vanilla flavored one or it may be too sweet.

W/B Anonymous and tell us how it went. I am sure my readers and Turtle mountain would love to know!
